One day after Liverpool’s desire to buy Gelson Martins was reported, the Portuguese press now claims that Manchester United have joined the race for the winger.
The information is that it’s not Sporting’s plan to sell the 22-year-old now, but a good offer from Liverpool or Manchester United could change that.
O Jogo believe Sporting would accept at least €40m, and in an optimistic possibility, they would push for €50m. The player has a €60m release clause, so that’s something the Portuguese club can rely on when making the demands.
Once again, as they always do when speaking of Gelson, the newspaper says the big clubs became aware of his talents during the ‘show’ he gave against Real Madrid last year.
You’d expect him to have scored a hat trick or the winner when you read that, but he was just good in Sporting’s 2-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Manchester United interest seems a convenient tool for Sporting to pressure Liverpool on price.
