Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not the best in the world and often just plays “lawn chess” with his players.

That’s according to Didi Hamann, who has criticised the Spanish coach ahead of their upcoming clash with Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Manchester City take on the German giants in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final meeting this evening.

The game will again see Pep Guardiola coming up against Thomas Tuchel, two of the more highly respected coaches currently working in the game.

Guardiola is felt by many to be among the best managers to have worked in the game after a trophy laden career so far with Barcelona, Bayern and Manchester City that has seen him win two Champions League titles and numerous domestic successes.

He has not won Europe’s top club competition since success with Barcelona in 2011, though, something which Hamann believes indicates he is not anymore special than anyone else, especially since his last final loss in said tournament came against his upcoming managerial opponent.

“In decisive situations, you need players who make decisions themselves. He takes that away from them. Julian Nagelsmann did that too. Tuchel doesn’t do that,” he said.

“Guardiola has not managed anything that others have not managed. Everybody tells you that a Pep Guardiola is the super father of coaches.

“But he was in a Champions League final in ten years with Bayern Munich and Man City – and he lost that himself. And now people tell me he’s the best manager in the world – sorry.”
