Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted he wants to strengthen his side’s attack and midfield before the transfer window closes.

Bologna’s Marko Arnautović was identified as the target for the attack and the Red Devils’ initial €8-9m bid was turned down by the Serie A side.

The backlash faced by Manchester United fans and the Italian club’s asking price were the contributing factors for the Old Trafford club to end their interest in the Austrian.

On Saturday, The Athletic explained Atlético Madrid’s Álvaro Morata remains a ‘genuine possibility’ for the Premier League side. It was said they have held talks over a potential deal for the former Chelsea man, who is available for €35m.

Claims made by The Athletic are relayed in Sunday’s edition of AS, who then share their own information on this case. It’s explained Manchester United’s interest in the 29-year-old ‘already comes from a far’.

The Spain international was at Chelsea between 2017 and 2020, where he was on loan with Los Rojiblanbcos from January 2019.

After enduring a difficult time in England, the report states the Premier League is now not his favourite destination.

Amid interest from Manchester United, AS add that Morata would prefer to continue with his current employer, ‘except for an irrefutable financial offer’.
