There are two reasons why Bernardo Silva has been a hot topic in Portugal in the past couple of days.

First, because of a social media post about his Manchester City teammate Benjamin Mendy, which has understandably caused issue given the, albeit likely unintentional, racist connotations. Then, because his love for his childhood club Benfica is pretty much alive.

After scoring a hat-trick against Watford this weekend, Bernardo has been asked by two Brazilians to pick a song to be played in a video with his goals.

This has become a tradition in Brazil since Fantástico, a Globo TV show which has been aired every Sunday since 1973, started asking players who scored a hat-trick to pick a song.

Bernardo Silva was reluctant to choose at first, but then told those asking to play Benfica’s anthem.

The Portuguese media and Benfica fans have been crazy about it since then. Bernardo Silva has played for all of the Eagles’ youth ranks, but only made three appearances for the club before leaving for Monaco in 2015.

That’s why they hope he will be back to the Estádio da Luz one day.
