Liverpool are showing ‘concrete’ interest in RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai but Newcastle United are ‘still in’ the race for the Hungarian.

That’s according to Sky Germany journalist Philipp Hinze, who has confirmed reports from England that Liverpool are looking at the midfielder.

Reports today had claimed that Jurgen Klopp was looking into a potential deal for Szoboszlai as he looks to completely reinvent his midfield this summer.

Szoboszlai has a €70m release clause in his contract, a fee that has interested several parties, and it was claimed Liverpool had added his name to their list of potential reinforcements.

Hinze now backs that up stating that he ‘can confirm’ that the Reds are showing ‘concrete’ interest in Szoboszlai this summer.

However, he adds that both clubs felt the release clause was ‘too expensive’ in the first step’, and neither have made an ‘official offer’.

He states that the Hungarian has an ‘open future’ in front of him thanks to his €70m release clause but states that said clause only runs until 30th June. After that date, the transfer fee is ‘freely negotiable’.

Liverpool, therefore, need to move quickly if they want to get him for that price this summer or they risk having to negotiate with Leipzig over a fee in the coming weeks.

There’s also potential competition from Newcastle, who are ‘still in’ the mix for the player after numerous reports since January regarding their interest and a claim they were still pushing for a deal earlier this month.

Newcastle would certainly have the money to match that release clause but whether they are willing to do so remains to be seen, with the same to be said of Liverpool.
