Netherlands legend Willem van Hanegem believes Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk can play for one of the big clubs in the Premier League. Van Dijk has been in impressive form for Southampton this season, but was recently sidelined with injury.

In his column for AD.nl, Van Hanegem said Van Dijk is unlucky to pick up a serious injury at such an important period for the player. The former Feyenoord star believes the Dutch international is now ready to take the next step in his career after impressing for club and country.

Van Hanegem thinks at this moment in time the Southampton star is the national team’s best defender, and that he can go on to join a major club.

“Our best central defender is out for long time with an injury. Virgil van Dijk has been unlucky, he’s a player who I hoped could now make the next step. For me he can play for a top club in England,” said the Dutch legend.

Van Dijk has been linked with other clubs in the Premier League after establishing himself as one of the best defenders playing in England. With the uncertainty over the future of Van Dijk, Southampton have been showing an interest in other central defenders in recent weeks, especially after the departure of Jose Fonte.
