Former Netherlands midfielder Willem van Hanegem believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Vincent Janssen should remain at the club. The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray in the past week.

Writing in his column for AD.nl, Van Hanegem said that like Janssen he too would have turned down a move to Galatasaray, despite the lack of playing time the striker is getting at Tottenham.

The former Feyenoord star is sure Janssen can score goals in Turkey, but thinks he must continue to test himself at a higher level in the Premier League, and succeed with Tottenham.

With no prospect of a loan move to another English club, Van Hanegem said Janssen should now see out the season with Spurs.

“Janssen turned down Galatasaray, and I would have done the same in his place. Perhaps he could score ten goals in the Turkish league before the summer, but it’s not the level of the Premier League. In England he can’t be rented out to, say, West Ham, so it’s best to play out the season at Spurs,” said the Dutch legend.

Janssen was one of Tottenham’s major signings in the last transfer window, but has found goals hard to come by since his arrival. Despite some encouraging performances, the Netherlands international has scored just three goals this seasons, all via the penalty spot.
