Chris Wood’s 27 goals for Leeds United this season looked like they’d be enough to fire his club to the play-offs. A poor end to the season, combined with other clubs going on good runs means it wasn’t to be, and the failure led to Garry Monk leaving his post.
None of that can diminish Wood’s achievements at Leeds over the Championship campaign, but now he’s got the chance to make his name on the world stage. Spanish newspaper AS have been looking forward to the Confederations Cup and picking out players who will shine.
Some of those are expected world stars… and Leeds United’s Chris Wood joins them.
AS believe that Wood has shown so much this season that he could be at the forefront of a New Zealand ‘surprise’, and even getting out of their group would be an achievement for the Kiwis.
Wood will captain New Zealand in the abscense of West Ham’s Winston Reid, and it’s clear he’s got a chance to really up his profile.
AS, a Real Madrid leaning newspaper, haven’t yet suggested Zinedine Zidane may be watching.
