Leeds United defender Giuseppe Bellusci had to watch from the sidelines as Empoli lost their opening Serie A game to Sampdoria yesterday. The 26-year-old joined Empoli on loan for the season earlier in the transfer window, but he’s still waiting to make his debut for the Tuscan side.

Bellusci was again named on the Empoli substitutes bench at the weekend following his exclusion from the starting eleven for the Serie A club in their recent Coppa Italia clash with Vicenza.

Bellusci was expected to replace former Empoli defender Lorenzo Tonelli after he joined Napoli this summer, but the Leeds United player has so far been overlooked.

Bellusci played no minutes in any of the two games even though he could have got a run out against Serie B side Vicenza in the cup last weekend. Empoli have a right of redemption on the central defender, but he’s yet to be given a chance to prove himself with the club.

Bellusci will now have to wait until next Sunday’s game with Udinese to see if he will finally make his competitive debut for Empoli. The defender’s return to Italy is in total contrast to his former Leeds United teammate Mirco Antenucci, who’s been banging the goals in since joining Serie B side SPAL in June.
