Tuesday’s edition of Record has a big article on the ongoing race to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

The 22-year-old has 25 goals for his club so far this season, and has found the back of the net repeatedly in recent league games. That’s seen Benfica’s hopes of a huge transfer fee increase, and could create problems for West Ham United.

According to the report, David Moyes’ side made a ‘bulging’ offer ‘in the last breath of January’ and that saw West Ham ‘take the lead’ for the player. However, despite the claimed offer being around €50m, it’s now thought that Benfica were right to hold off on a sale, with interest growing in the Uruguay international.

Benfica would have agreed to a sale for around €60m in the winter market, explain Record, but they now want to set a new price, feeling there’s been ‘inflation’ in Nunez’s valuation.

That would mean a bigger fee would be needed from West Ham, yet the bigger issue for the Hammers could be the calibre of the clubs who are expected to compete with them.
