Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb today brings more news on Newcastle United’s pursuit for a new manager.

According to their latest report, super agent Jorge Mendes has been ‘pushing’ for Gennaro Gattuso to be the one to take over the Magpies following the decision to sack Steve Bruce.

It’s claimed that Newcastle’s current position in the Premier League table ‘discourages a top profile’ from joining the club now, as they’d rather wait until the summer for it.

So in the past few days, Mendes ‘proposed’ that Gattuso goes in. The former Milan midfielder is now said to be ‘among the candidates’ to the job left by Steve Bruce.

Gattuso has been unemployed since leaving his job at Napoli at the end of last season, and while he was supposed to take charge of Fiorentina, things didn’t work out between him and La Viola despite the initial agreement they had.

TuttoMercatoWeb points out that Newcastle had been after other names such as Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers, but with their current situation, those who ‘remain in the race’ are Gattuso, Lucien Favre and Paulo Fonseca.

It’s said the new boss should be in charge after the international break.
