This hasn’t been an easy international break for Tottenham Hotspur fullback Emerson Royal.
Following Brazil’s loss to Colombia last week, we saw fans rating the player’s performance with a 1 out of 10, making it clear he’s not very appreciated in his own country.
Now following a new defeat, this time to their rivals Argentina, the Tottenham player spoke to the local media and is quoted by Globo Esporte talking about that criticism.
Emerson started by claiming that Brazil are still adapting to Fernando Diniz’s style, and his poor performances has something to do with this new cycle.
“I get a lot of criticism, I’ve seen the fans saying this and that… that I didn’t know how to play football. I’m not one to listen. It’s a process,” said Emerson Royal.
“There are a lot of new players, practically the whole team has changed. We have a different style of play, not the same as Tite. The fans have to understand that. It’s not easy to play like this. Few teams in the world play like this. What Diniz has been doing with the national team is very difficult.”
The Tottenham player also asked supporters to wait and see what happens with the new manager’s process.
“The fans have to be patient and understand this process. We’ll get the wins, we’ll get the small details right that have been causing us to concede goals. And we’re Brazilians, we’re always good on the ball.”
Following the new losses, Brazil now stand in sixth in the World Cup Qualifiers, standing behind Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.
Emerson was a starter in both games, and only time will tell whether he will hold that spot for much longer.
The fullback will be back in action for Tottenham next weekend, as Ange Postecoglou’s side will face Aston Villa on Sunday.
