Mexico legend Rafa Marquez has revealed he turned down the chance to sign for Tottenham earlier in his career.

Marquez is regarded one of the more most successful Mexican imports in Europe, having won 21 titles across 22 seasons during his playing career.

Most of these were picked up during a highly successful seven-year spell with Spanish giants Barcelona, where he made 242 appearances in total and won four La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues, the Super Cup, Club World Cup and Supercopa de España and Copa del Rey.

Before the move to the Camp Nou, he also enjoyed success in France with Monaco, where he spent four years and won the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de la Ligue.

The Mexican joined Monaco in 1999 after breaking through in his native Mexico with Atlas and enjoying success with his country at the U20 World Cup in Nigeria.

However, it seems his career could have taken a very different path, with Tottenham having made an approach before Monaco came calling.

“I had played in the World Cup in Nigeria,” he told Team Barça, relayed by Juan Futbol.

“I excelled in the World Cup and was called up to the senior national team.

“Before going to the Copa América, there was an approach from an English team, Tottenham, but the truth is that I wasn’t interested in going to play in England.
