Despite the great season that players like Edinson Cavani and Luke Shaw had for Manchester United, few will complain that Bruno Fernandes was once again awarded as the Player of the Year at the club.

With 28 goals and 17 assists, the midfielder continues having huge impact at Old Trafford since his arrival from Sporting, and now seeks his first trophy with the Red Devils.

Fernandes is featured in an interview today with ESPN Brasil, where he spoke to Natali Gedra about how the Premier League season went and what Manchester United need to do better to fight for the title next year.

“I think our mindset is growing. We are realising that all games are important, that all games are difficult. We are realising just because we are winning, it doesn’t mean that we are going to win the games. We realised that playing with teams that are struggling not to go down can be more complicated than we thought,” Bruno Fernandes told ESPN Brasil.

“We lost four points when we were still ahead, against Sheffield and West Bromwich. And it was four points that made a big difference for City to arrive and surpass us too. And it made us understand that we have to be focused and realise that all games are going to be difficult and important so that we can stay up there. I think that’s what we failed since January, more or less, which was when we had our biggest crack. When we could have even gained distance and increased distance to City, which we were unable to do, and City ended up with a lot of merit to pass us by and set them distance from us.”

Bruno Fernandes was also asked about Edinson Cavani, who joined Manchester United on a free move from PSG last summer and already scored 16 goals for the club. The midfielder claims it’s been quite easy to play along with the Uruguayan star.

“I think Edinson is a very smart player. He’s a player who gives us a reference at the front. He’s a pure nine, we can call him that. A player who moves very well within the box, which makes things easier for those who play behind him.

“Obviously knowing that his movement when the ball is tumbling sideways is always, or almost always, perfect. Sometimes you just need to set the right time for a cross or pass and we know that he’s unlikely to miss, because we know that we have a pure nine in the front that in few opportunities can score goals.”

Now Fernandes says he’s confident that this squad is ready to fight for bigger things next season.

“All players understand more and more the mentality it takes to play for Manchester and to fight for titles. I’m part of this, I want to help the club to win and improve and I hope it will continue to grow more and more so that next year we can fight for even more trophies.”
