Newcastle United’s January signing Bruno Guimarães has scored three goals in the Premier League and two of them ended up helping the Tyneside club pick up six points.

The midfielder’s first goal was the winner in the Magpies 2-1 win over Southampton last month. The other two goals came in his side’s 2-1 victory against Leicester City on Sunday, which included a stoppage time winner.

After scoring a brace for Newcastle United against the Foxes, the 24-year-old appeared as a guest on SporTV’s program, Tá na Área, relayed by Globo Esporte.

Eddie Howe’s side were in the relegation zone when the Brazil international made a switch to St James’ Park in the winter market. Guimarães was asked whether it was ‘brave decision’ to join a club in the bottom of the table, especially during a World Cup year.

“I was doing well at Lyon, starting all the games, with a great partnership with Paquetá. We played very well, but it was always my dream to play in the Premier League, even more so now with Newcastle’s new project,” he said.

“I’ve always been a guy who liked projects, challenges. I believed, I accepted and yesterday I was crowned with the goals, the tie and the victory, which left us 12 points from the relegation zone with six games to go. So, I believe it was the right decision.”

On the difference between Ligue 1 and the Premier League, the South American explained: “It really is above the others, mainly in terms of intensity. In French football it is physical. The guys are strong, but they don’t have the intensity they have in the Premier League. Here it really is different.

“I believe that everything here has a greater proportion than any other championship. I just arrived and the fans are already crazy about me, they’re in love.

“I’ve already said that the affection I have here is almost the same or even a little greater than I had at Athletico, where I was a great idol. So, I’m very delighted, living it here with a lot of passion.”

The Newcastle player looks stronger and has also lost weight, and his physique became a topic of discussion.

“I’ve been working with a nutritionist, with my physical therapist, I’m very careful with food. Even because playing in the Premier League is different. The guys are strong and fast, it’s no use just being smart, if you’re not strong and fast, you can’t play either,” Guimarães added.

‘It’s a joint effort that is working very well. I’m also enjoying this evolution I’m having with Edu [Eduardo Barthem], also studying the opponents. Knowing where I can have opportunities.”
