Despite playing far more under Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United than he did under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the idea that Diogo Dalot could return to Italy next season refuses to go away.

Normally it’s AS Roma who are linked, where José Mourinho is in charge, as the Portuguese manager knows the player first hand from his own spell in charge at Old Trafford.

However, they aren’t the only club interested, as Fiorentina are now thrown into the mix, perhaps remembering the Manchester United player’s loan stint at Milan and deciding a player of his versatility could go a long way in Vincenzo Italiano’s squad.

The news comes from Enzo Bucchioni, a well respected journalist in Italy, who spent five years as the director of QS Sport and wrote an editorial for Firenze Viola.

The idea stems from the fact that Álvaro Odriozola isn’t going to be bought because Real Madrid will want €20m or so for him, and so an alternative will be needed.

That’s where the Manchester United man comes in, because ‘it’s no coincidence that Fiorentina are moving in different directions to find’ someone else.

The track leading to Diogo Dalot is said to be ‘very hot’, and the Portugal international is described as having an excellent right foot, being good at running and is a player who is technically ‘very suited to the Italian game’.

Fiorentina, down their end, are ‘aiming for a loan with a right of purchase of around €10m’, and this is where Bucchioni loses us.

Having spent nearly £20m on Dalot in the first place, regardless of the fact his contract is up in 2023, Manchester United will not let him go for less than half of that, especially since he is still playing a fair amount and could have a future at Old Trafford under the right manager.

Something to keep an eye on, either way, but that €10m option to buy seems low to us.
