Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes had on Wednesday a word with the media from Portugal, where he played for Sporting CP for a few years.

His time with the Lions was specifically the main topic of the interview, with the 24-year-old mentioning how much he still loves the club.

It turns out Nunes even claimed he’d like to be back at Sporting one day, once he leaves Wolves.

“It was a wonderful time and I will never forget it. Sporting will always be my first home in Portugal and I hope to be able to return one day,” Matheus Nunes told Eleven Sports (via Record).

Nunes also recalled his move to Wolves, which happened last summer, with the Molineux side paying Sporting €45m for the signing.

He claims that former boss Bruno Lage had a big impact on that, as his arrival at the club was the manager’s personal request.

“Bruno had already been talking to my godfather for some time, saying that he really wanted me to come, he always sent messages… and my colleagues from the national team spoke to me.

“Meanwhile, I was on vacation in the Algarve and caught up with Wolves players there, because they were interning there, and, once again, they told me to come here. I think they also played an important role.”

Nunes has a contract with Wolves running until 2027, with an option for a further year.

Following his move last summer, he has managed to quickly adapt to English football and quickly became an important player for the team, always being a regular starter.

That’s why, despite the wish of a comeback to Sporting, that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.
