Despite Gianluigi Donnarumma looking shaky in goal against North Macedonia and calls for Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario to take over, Luciano Spalletti stuck to his guns and kept the Paris Saint-Germain man between the sticks.

That paid off, since he made some good saves in the win against Ukraine, while the Spurs goalkeeper watched from the bench, soaking it all in.

In fact, there are some, such as former goalkeeper Salvatore Soviero, who spoke to Radio Marte, relayed by Area Napoli, who believe the Tottenham summer signing needs to prove himself a bit more before having a chance of getting his first cap.

The 26-year-old only transferred from Empoli in July, and while he has played well in his first few games under Ange Postecoglou, he still has a bit to go.

Soverio said: “He must have a year of consecration. Playing at Tottenham is not like doing well at Empoli. It’s all a mental question. You have to be able to handle the stress and the tension of an important team: if you make a mistake in London, it’s different.”

Therefore, it appears there is a desire to see how Vicario bounces back from any mistake he might make at Tottenham before giving him a chance at the big role in the national team.

This seems fair enough, and while a slip up is inevitable at some point during his time at Spurs, Postecoglou and co. will be hoping they will be few and far between.
