Napoli defender Leo Østigård has told Transfermarkt that he’s pleased with Kim Min-jae’s decision to pick Bayern Munich over Manchester United in the summer window.

The 26-year-old defender arrived at the Naples club from Fenerbahçe in 2022 and played a vital role in helping them win the title last season. His contract at Napoli had a release clause valid between July 1st-15th which was exercised by the Bavarian club.

Prior to that, there were several reports from Italy insisting that Manchester United were keen on securing Min-jae’s services. Back in June, Il Mattino had even stated the centre-back had accepted an offer from the Red Devils.

Østigård played alongside the South Korea international last season, and when discussing the latter’s exit, he mentioned Manchester United.

“No one here is happy with his departure. He’s a great person and we miss him. He had a great opportunity: apparently, he could decide between Manchester United and Bayern Munich and in the end, he opted for the Bavarians. It was a good choice,” he said.

Erik ten Hag’s side finished the last window without adding a new centre-back to their squad.

The 20-year-old Norwegian also joined the Serie A winners in 2022 and was restricted to 11 games in all competitions last season. Østigård’s situation has improved this season as he’s made nine appearances. He believes it’s at least partly due to Min-jae’s exit.

“It’s undeniable that his departure had positive implications for me. My chances of playing immediately increased and now it’s my turn to do my best,” Østigård explained.

“The previous season was difficult for me. It’s easier to show your qualities when you have several games in a row rather than just one every now and then.”
