Benfica have finally spoken out about their attempt to get Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Gonçalo Guedes on a new loan.

There’s been some confusion about this pursuit in the last few days, as even though the Portuguese media many times claimed a deal was guaranteed, the Spanish press said Real Betis were actually moving to get him signed as well.

Now, as relayed by O Jogo, Benfica boss Roger Schmidt talked about Guedes in a press conference. He confirmed their interest in the Wolves player, but did not guarantee they’ll get him signed again.

“It’s an open question. He was a very important player for us. He was unlucky with injuries. If we get the chance, it will be fantastic because he’s a great player. I really appreciate him as a player and as a person.”

Guedes was loaned by Wolves to Benfica in January, and in the few months there, he had a couple of knee injuries which required surgery. That’s why he couldn’t be available for the whole period, and only made 15 appearances for them.

The player is currently recovering from the operation, and when he was seen with the English squad during pre-season, the Portuguese media took it as a surprise.

Now it seems clear there’s no deal, and clubs should continue negotiating for a new move.
