Leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the 2016-17 season, Modou Sougou is currently without a club for the first time in his career.

Transferring to the Owls from Marseille on a free transfer in 2015, the Senegalese forward spent one and a half seasons at Hillsborough, before being sent on loan to Moreirense for the last six months of his contract.

Enjoying his time in Portugal, scoring two goals and picking up three assists, his performances, however, weren’t enough to earn him a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday.

Speaking to Le Dauphiné, the 32-year-old looked back at his time with the Owls and why he moved there in the first place.

He said: “After my second loan with Evian, I was still under contract at Marseille and Bielsa was still manager, so I knew I had to leave. I had the chance to go to Sheffield, and I’d always had the desire to play in England one day.

“The first season there, we lost the play-offs against Hull City. I broke my shoulder over there against QPR, then my shin in training. I spent six months without playing football, and when I came back, it was hard. Their squads are huge. We were 32 players under contract, that’s without the ten youngsters”.

That’s when Sheffield Wednesday decided a loan was best for all parties, and he ended up in Portugal, where he won the League Cup with Moreirense.

Now a free agent, the winger said he turned down a lot of opportunities over the summer, such as clubs in China, Greece or Cyprus, but with a family to look after, he’s simply after the right project.

Whether that comes in January or not, he’ll have to wait and see.

For now, he’s training every day, and as he puts it: “All I’m missing now is the ball in my feet”.
