Liverpool should make a move for Ajax star Jurrien Timber this summer, potentially as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

That’s according to John Barnes, who believes the 21-year-old would be an ideal addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad this summer.

Timber has been impressing at Ajax for several seasons and was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League last season when Erik ten Hag was seemingly determined to sign him for Manchester United.

That move did not happen and he remained at Ajax, where he has continued to impress and build on his ever growing reputation.

Now it is Liverpool who are being heavily linked with a move, with that rumour fuelled by recent claims that the player’s girlfriend was looking for a house in Liverpool ahead of a possible move to Merseyside in the summer.

Barnes is one of those who impressed by what he has seen so far and believes the defender would be a ‘fantastic option’ if Liverpool can get it over the line.

“Of course I know that he played together with Van Dijk in the Dutch national team and according to the latest rumors Van Dijk has told him that he has to go to Anfield,” he told Soccer News.

“He is a good player and would therefore be a good asset to Liverpool. Virgil is already over thirty and he will not stay with the club forever. So in the long term it’s not just about ‘coming to The Reds to form a duo with Van Dijk.’

“Liverpool also just needs to look for a new defender for the future. And in that respect, Timber would of course be a fantastic option if we manage to capture him.”
