João Virgínia is set for a contract renewal at Everton, according to reports from the goalkeeper’s home country.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo writes that before going out on a new loan spell, the 22-year-old will sign a new deal with the Toffees.
Virgínia is then moving to Cambuur, in the Eredivisie, for one season, as widely reported by the European media over the past week.
The goalkeeper’s current contract with Everton expires in 2024, so that proves the Toffees want him to be well protected before they send him out on loan.
This is the third loan Virgínia is set to have since joining Everton in 2018, as he’s already had spells at Reading and Sporting.
There had been big expectation for his season with Sporting, since that also meant his return to Portugal. However, Virgínia could hardly get starts at the club, only making eight appearances, so the Lisbon side didn’t trigger the buying option they had over him.
Now Everton’s strategy seems to be to let him get experience elsewhere and then maybe have a chance at Goodison Park one day.
