Last summer, Everton signed Rúben Vinagre on a season-long loan deal from Sporting, with an option to buy.

The 23-year-old was brought in to provide cover and competition for Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Vinagre has made four appearances for Everton this season, out of which three came in August. The other appearance came in the Toffees’ EFL Cup defeat to AFC Bournemouth.

The Eagles initially took the player from Wolves in 2021 and made his stay permanent last year by paying €10m. He didn’t convince Rúben Amorim, which is why the coach decided to send the fullback out on loan to gain competitive experience at Everton.

Instead, the defender has struggled under Frank Lampard’s orders and this has seen the Portuguese club ‘re-evaluate’ his situation at Goodison Park.

Sporting will reassess Vinagre’s situation in the winter market. The possibility to cut short his stay at Everton and then send him on loan to another club has not been ruled out.

O Jogo state the ‘case is delicate’ because Sporting paid €10m to buy a player who has hardly featured for them and has struggled for minutes at the Merseyside club.

Therefore, Sporting are considering moving forward with a ‘new solution’ of finding another club for Vinagre in the current window. In other words, Vinagre’s future is away from Everton.
