Earlier today, we covered a few reports from Portugal regarding the battle for the signing for Porto star Luis Diaz, as a few Premier League clubs seem to be very interested in signing the 24-year-old.

You may remember that back in the summer, when the winger still hadn’t started the great season he’s having with the Dragons, it was Everton who were claimed to be one of the contenders for his signing.

It turns out newspaper Record today recalls that attempt, and by the way they write it, it’s made clear that the Toffees never got really close on taking Diaz to the Goodison Park.

The outlet claims it’s ‘ironic’ that the English club who ‘went further’ for the signing in the summer (Everton) are coincidentally from the city of Liverpool, where the player could end up landing in January, but at Anfield.

It’s said the Toffees wanted to pay €25m for the move and include James Rodriguez in the deal.

The problem there was that Everton’s offer wasn’t convincing at all. Firstly because Porto were not ‘losing their minds’ with James’ potential return to the Estádio do Dragão, but also because the Toffees ‘couldn’t conclude the most basic step’, which was to seduce Diaz to make the move.

Now a few months later, the winger is set to move for a lot more than that, as it’s believed that Liverpool could pay up to €80m to sign him, including bonuses.

It’s also been reported this week that Tottenham had a €60m bid turned down.
