With the future of Jan Vertonghen up in the air as the Belgian defender has yet to renew his contract with Tottenham, José Mourinho is likely going to have to find a replacement.

Since he already has Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sánchez at his disposal to start games, he can go down two avenues if a reinforcement is needed: a young centre-back he can develop or an experienced one that would be cheap and could help immediately.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Portuguese appears to be leaning towards the latter of the two, as there’s a belief Spurs are interested in Diego Godín.

The Italian newspaper explain both Manchester United and ‘especially Mourinho’s Tottenham’ have set their eyes on the Uruguay international, and it’s ‘clear’ Inter will have to replace him.

Thankfully for them, there’s a ready made option in London in the shape of… Jan Vertonghen.

Corriere state the Belgian represents ‘an occasion’ for the Serie A club, and guarantees ‘fewer uncertainties’ than Godín since he’s very well versed in a three at the back tactic.

Plus, he’s left-footed, and the only left-food centre-back Antonio Conte has at his disposal currently is a young and inexperienced Alessandro Bastoni.

It would be a case of one in, one out at both Inter and Tottenham here, but it obviously wouldn’t be a swap since Vertonghen is out of contract and Godín’s transfer would require negotiations (his deal expires in 2022).
