Sevilla director Monchi today spoke about the situation of Jules Koundé, who besides being chased by Chelsea for a long time, has been attracting interest from Barcelona.

Speaking to Onda Cero, the official made it clear that the defender’s future is pretty unpredictable, given there’s interest in his services and Sevilla haven’t closed the door to a sale.

When speaking about Chelsea, Monchi made clear he’s very aware of the Blues’ quest to sign a couple of centre-backs, following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

“Xavi has good taste wanting Araujo and Koundé as central defenders, it’s not a bad partnership. But so far there has been zero contact with Barcelona. I know that Chelsea have to look for two central defenders, but the interest in Koundé comes from England and other countries. I would have to be a fortune teller to know what is going to happen,” Monchi told Onda Cero (via Mundo Deportivo).

“There are calls from everywhere. The money is starting to roll in a bit. Koundé has established himself with France and will play at the World Cup. It’s logical that there is interest in him and there is. As of today, he is recovering from injury in Los Angeles and will join in Korea later, like the rest of the internationals.”

Last week, strong claims from the Spanish media said Chelsea sent three emissaries to negotiate with Sevilla. And despite showing their strong wish to buy the player, having negotiated for three days, the officials reportedly returned to London without a deal.

It was claimed the La Liga side demand €60m plus €10m in bonuses, and the Blues wouldn’t reach that amount, at least for now. With Monchi claiming the competition is big, that’s one more argument the Spanish club have to continue being firm in the negotiations.
