Following the news that David Moyes is taking his time over whether he will renew at West Ham United or not, we get Stade de Reims’ general director mentioning the Hammers and Will Still in the same sentence, relayed by Foot Mercato.

The 31-year-old has been in a bit of hot water in France over the past few days after his interview with The Athletic, with many feeling he lacked respect towards his current club when making it very clear he wanted to go manage in England.

He has made it no secret that his favourite team are West Ham, and if he were to be linked with the job in the coming months, it would be no surprise, since he was a candidate in the past.

Mathieu Lacour was asked about the Still interview during a press conference on Friday, and he actually backed his manager, seemingly pleased with what had happened.

He said: “There are no problems within the club. As usual with Will, we spoke in a frank and honest manner, and we have always had a healthy relationship. Not a day goes by without us talking. Regarding what is said in the article, we are a stepping stone club for young players and for managers.

“We would be very proud if Will were to manage in the Premier League at a team like his favourite, West Ham, for example. There’s no shame in showing your ambitions, and the manager can do that, but make no mistake bout it: our story at Stade de Reims is by no means over. We’re looking ahead and not just to the end of the season, but also in the medium term. We both don’t want the story to end.”

To us, this sounds very much like Stade de Reims would be happy to let Still go to West Ham or another Premier League club, as long as someone pays the widely reported release clause of around €5m in his contract.

The manager’s deal with the Ligue 1 side comes to an end in 2025, meaning there is no obligation for the French club to let their manager go unless he resigns or the release clause is triggered.
