With Arsenal linked to Athletico Paranaense wonderkid Vitor Roque since early February, they always seemed like one of the strongest contenders to sign the 18-year-old.

And even though the Catalan media is often claiming the player is more likely to head to Barcelona, it looks like there’s no reason for the Gunners to give up on that chase.

Athletico director Alexandre Mattos was today interviewed by Globo Esporte, and he made it clear that the player’s future is open, with no destination set for now.

“There’s absolutely nothing to it except the pain of people saying that ‘he’s sold’, ‘that Barcelona want him’. At the right time, if something comes up that the president thinks is worthwhile, then we’ll talk. It’s worth remembering that we made the biggest investment in our history.”

Globo Esporte recalls that Arsenal are one of the clubs who were visited by the player’s staff this month, showing that contact has been established with the Gunners.

According to the outlet, besides Barcelona, two Premier League clubs have already promised that they’ll be making their attempts in the summer window, while Atletico want at least €42m for the sale.

With so many stories speaking of the Gunners’ interest, including news about Edu Gaspar staying in touch for the signing, it’d be no surprise if it’s Mikel Arteta’s side who’ll move for him.
