Werder Bremen didn’t do their research properly before signing Naby Keita from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Bremen favourite Rüdiger Abramczik, who has questioned whether the German side did their research properly on the midfielder.

Keita left Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer, with neither he nor the Reds keen on an extension to his contract or their relationship.

He soon signed for Bremen in a surprise move, electing to the return the Bundesliga in the hope of getting his career back on track after an injury-laden, disappointing time at Anfield.

The deal was very much seen as a coup for Bremen, but that positivity has quickly dissipated as the midfielder has brought his injury problems from Liverpool with him.

A series of injuries have led to growing disappointment and frustration over the player and his lack of availability, with it also reported in Germany that several clubs passed up the chance to sign him after going through his medical history.

That is something Bremen already did but decided to sign him anyway, although Abramczik believes their research may not have been deep enough.

“We knew beforehand that he was prone to injuries,” he said.

“He hardly played in Liverpool for three years. Maybe Bremen didn’t look proper or didn’t question the injury history enough. The risk was too high.

“Even though Keita was a free transfer, he certainly costs a lot.

“When he’s fit, I think he’s a world-class man. Jürgen Klopp also saw his potential, but the plan didn’t work in Liverpool either.”
