Late last week, KRC Genk’s president made it clear that they did not regret their decision to sell Paul Onuachu to Southampton despite them going on a terrible run of form following his exit.

While that may be the case, the player himself might be looking back with some sadness at his choice, since he was unable to convince at St Mary’s, making just 11 appearances and failing to find the back of the net.

Onuachu will now have to face the potential prospect of playing Championship football with Southampton next season, and there are some in Belgium who feel this won’t go well for him either, such as Hein Vanhaezebrouck and Arnar Vidarsson when speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.

The former of the two was immediately critical of the Nigeria international: “That was definitely not a good choice. You don’t go to the team that is last in the Premier League, with the risk of ending up in the Championship.

“Did Onuachu really think he was going to keep Southampton in the Premier League? And for what? €18m For a Premier League, that’s pocket change.”

This was something Vidarsson agreed with, adding: “It turned out to be a bad choice for both the player and Genk. Now he has to play against defenders next season who like nothing more than to stand against that type of striker.”

The towering forward arrived at Southampton with a great reputation as a goalscorer, having found the back of the net 85 times in 134 appearances for Genk, as well as picking up 10 assists.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t what he demonstrated at Southampton, where Ruben Selles found it hard to work him into his plans.
