As Anderlecht prepare to face West Ham United in the Conference League, Jan Vertonghen was present in his team’s press conference ahead of the game.

The player knows the Hammers well from his long time spent in the Premier League, and will be hoping to bring his experience to help his team overcome the London side.

Both Anderlecht and West Ham have endured very slow starts to their campaigns in terms of results, and a win here could help either side get a good run going in the near future.

Despite being near the bottom of the Premier League table, the Hammers will enter the fixture as favourites due to their talented squad and large summer spending, and Vertonghen was quick to warn everyone.

He said, relayed by RTBF: “I’ve always seen West Ham as a sleeping giant. The last two years, they finished in the top six or top seven, but now the results haven’t been as good. It’s nice to play against a big name, to meet a team of that level.”

Vertonghen was at Tottenham for eight years, during which he faced West Ham nine times, all in the Premier League, winning five, drawing two and losing another two games.

Following his time in London, the Belgium International moved to Portugal with Benfica for two years before returning to his home country this summer, again on a free transfer.
