In the past few days, the Brazilian media was taken over by rumours about the future of Manchester United star Edinson Cavani, as Corinthians and Palmeiras are said to be keen on his signing.

However, we all know that the striker is wanted by European clubs as well, especially because his contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of the season.

So as ESPN Brasil today features a story on his future, they point out that Barcelona are actually very strong in the race to sign the 34-year-old.

It’s claimed that following Sergio Aguero’s retirement, Cavani has now become Barça’s ‘plan A’. So instead of signing him for free in the summer, they’d rather get him in January.

Barcelona want someone who could bring ‘immediate return’, and with the player willing to ‘keep an eye’ on the World Cup in December 2022, the possibility ‘appeals’ to him.

ESPN claims that to get Cavani in January, the Catalan side would afford part of the salary he has at Old Trafford, while he’d like to sign for them until the summer of 2023, meaning a one and a half year contract.

However, it’s not said if Barça would pay the Red Devils a fee for the move.

Meanwhile, Brazilian clubs watch the situation, knowing that in case of a transfer to South America, the striker would make different demands and ask for a three-year deal.
