Chelsea allowed Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to return to Inter Milan and RB Leipzig and bolstered their attack by adding Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling to their squad in the summer window.

The west London club were keen on signing Raphinha and had agreed a deal with Leeds United. The deal didn’t take shape because the Brazilian wanted to join Barcelona and was able to get the move he desired.

Raphinha’s disappointment saw Chelsea shift their focus to Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané. The Germany international struggled to impress for the club in the second half of last season.

Sport1 chief reporter Kerry Hau has spoken about why the Blues failed to sign the 26-year-old.

A move to Chelsea would have been a ‘no brainer’ for the star since he knew the league well from his time at Manchester City.

Despite the west London club’s interest in the attacker, a summer transfer was vetoed by Julian Nagelsmann’s side. The player was also ‘not concerned’ with a return to England.

“There was a very clear signal from Bavaria: We plan with you. You have to get more involved, then you’ll play a lot. Sané understood and internalised this message,” Hau said.

Sané has started the season on a bright note, scoring three goals and registering two assists from six matches.
