Everton midfielder Andre Gomes saw a deadline day move to Fenerbahce fall by the wayside as the Turkish club didn’t consider him enough of an improvement.

That’s according to Sporx, who say the decision was made not to sign the Everton man despite the need to add a number six to the squad.

Gomes had been linked with a late move to Turkey after returning to Everton from a loan deal at Lille this summer.

A return there did not come to fruition and nor did a move elsewhere and he was left looking at Turkey, whose transfer deadline was yesterday, in the hope of getting a move out of Goodison Park.

Fenerbahce were thought to be considering him as they wanted to sign a midfielder for their squad, but a deal did not go through and Sporx explain why.

They say after spending nearly €50m this summer, those in charge at Fenerbahce were keen to secure a ‘very high-quality name’ for the number six position if they could.

Gomes was ‘recommended to the club’ but the Everton man was ‘vetoed’ because it was felt he would not improve the team considerably enough to justify the outlay.

Rather than moving for him, Fenerbahce ‘took a step back’ because the transfer fees involved were too high for their taste and they didn’t consider it a worthwhile deal.

Journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, meanwhile, reports that intermediary Emmanuel Adewole has recently left Istanbul after being in the city to negotiate a deal for Gomes.

He states that he was ‘authorised by Everton’ to meet with Fenerbahce and discuss a possible transfer for the Portuguese midfielder, although those talks seemingly came to nothing.

What is interesting is that Adewole has no immediate connection to Gomes, who is represented by the Wasserman group of agents.

There is a possibility that they authorised him to act on their behalf, but Sabuncuoğlu appears to be suggesting he was working for Everton and not the player.

Either way, it seems he failed to convince Fenerbahce to spend their money and Gomes will be remaining at Goodison Park until January at the least.
