On Tuesday, SER Girona Sport journalist Nil Solà reported Wolverhampton Wanderers and Girona are negotiating a deal for Santiago Bueno.

This is backed up by today’s Sport, who add the deal to take the defender to Wolves is well on track and ‘it would be a surprise’ if the operation isn’t closed in the next few days.

It’s said the centre-back has received an offer from Wolves and the La Liga side are in favour of sanctioning a move as it will help them sign a new midfielder and a forward.

The 24-year-old, who made 36 appearances last season, is one of the ‘most important assets’ of Girona.

Therefore, the Uruguay international’s exit would be a huge loss from the sporting point of view but the offer from Wolves is ‘more than tempting’ for both him and Girona.

Bueno’s deal lasts until 2026 and includes a €25m release clause. Sport say Gary O’Neil’s side and the Spanish club were negotiating the details of the operation yesterday for a fee less than the clause.

The report makes no mention of the fee proposed by Wolves but says it’ll be a club-record sale for Girona, exceeding the €10m fee paid by Real Sociedad for Portu in 2019.

Sport state Girona ‘finalise the transfer’ of Bueno to Wolves and it would be a surprise if the operation doesn’t go through before the window closes on Friday.
