Schalke are set to ‘win the race’ for Southampton striker Paul Onuachu and sign him on loan with an option to buy.

That’s according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who says the last details of the move ‘will be settled’ in the coming hours.

Onuachu has been heavily linked with a move away from Southampton this summer after a disastrous time at the club since joining from Genk in January.

He had been brought in to boost Southampton’s forward line and hopefully score the goals required to keep them in the Premier League, but failed to do either as neither Nathan Jones or Ruben Selles used him in the second half of the season.

He failed to score a single goal in 11 appearances and 404 minutes of football for the club and several reports have made it clear he would be part of a presumed exodus of players this summer following relegation.

Borussia Monchengladbach had appeared to be at the front of the queue, but it is in fact Schalke who have won the race according to Tavolieri.

He reports as much today, stating they are ‘set to’ secure Onuachu’s signature and sign him on loan from Southampton for the season with an option to make the move a permanent one.

The two clubs are currently working on the ‘last details’ of that move but it appears the major parts are done, and he will be bringing his short and miserable stint at St Mary’s to an end.
