PSV Eindhoven are ‘seriously considering’ sacking technical director John de Jong after he was open to selling Cody Gakpo this summer, with Leeds United one of the interested parties.
That’s according to Eindhovens Dagblad, relayed by Soccer Nieuws, who say De Jong is no longer in a safe position after a turbulent summer transfer window at the club.
They state that among other things, De Jong is accused of ‘being in favour’ of selling Gakpo at the end of the transfer window, as clubs like Leeds, Manchester United and Southampton all lined up at one point for the Dutchman.
Several Premier League sides were interested, including Leeds, who even flew over to the Netherlands late in the window to try and broker a deal.
That never happened, largely because the player decided to stay in the Netherlands, but De Jong was seemingly open to the deal and that’s annoyed PSV.
They also believe that the club are ‘stagnating’ and that can be attributed to the work De Jong is doing.
Marcel Brands and board member Hans van Breukelen are against a swift sacking De Jong, is said to be ‘surprised by the speed of the decision to send him away’.
Nonetheless ‘it looks like the td is leaving soon’ and Frank Arnesen has already been lined up as a potential replacement.
Whether that happens will be known sooner rather than later, but it seems it all stems from his willingness to sell Gakpo to Leeds, amongst others.
