Aston Villa are facing increased competition for Hellas Verona’s Cyril Ngonge, with Napoli ‘entering the race’ for his signature.

That’s according to Gianluca di Marzio, who says the Italian champions have broken into the race for the 23-year-old despite reports Aston Villa are closing in on him.

Reports since the beginning of this month have indicated Villa are keen on the winger, with it claimed they have made a real offer, and the path was clear to getting a deal done.

They appeared to have very little competition for the player’s signature, but Di Marzio reports that has now changed, with Napoli making a ‘decisive’ move to get him.

According to Di Marzio they have initiated contacts with Hellas Verona to try and understand the costs and feasibility of the potential operation and, in the process, try to get ahead of the competition. Whether that competition is Aston Villa isn’t made clear.

What is clear is that Ngonge is wanted property after impressing so far this season with five goals and two assists in 18 games in Serie A.

That’s attracted the attention of several clubs, chief among them Aston Villa, but their path could now be blocked by Napoli, who are also making moves behind the scenes.
