As the list of clubs who are interested in the signing of Fernandinho continues to grow, we see another club being linked to the Manchester City midfielder today.

Brazilian outlet UOL writes that Santos got keen on landing the 37-year-old this summer, and even started preparing a project to get him once he becomes a free agent.

One of the reasons the Peixe believe they could have an advantage in the race is that Fernandinho’s father is a club fan. However, the response wasn’t positive.

Santos reportedly heard that ‘it’s nearly all agreed’ between the midfielder and Athletico, his former club, where he started his professional career.

That’s why the white and black side backed off from the talks and are now just ‘monitoring the situation’ of the Manchester City player for now.

Since Fernandinho revealed he would not sign a contract extension with Manchester City, several Brazilian clubs started being linked to him in hope of signing him for free this summer.

Athletico, however, were always seen as the favourites in this race, as besides being his former club, they have the advantage of being based in Curitiba, where the midfielder’s family lives.
