Ajax will make another attempt to sign Steven Bergwijn in the summer transfer window, having failed to get him in January.
That’s according to De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, who says the deal may be difficult to do because of the finances involved.
Ajax were very keen on a deal for Bergwijn throughout January, with the Dutch side looking to get a deal done after selling David Neres.
They made several attempts to secure his signature but couldn’t get a transfer over the line, with Tottenham demanding too much and negotiations falling by the wayside.
Whether that is the case, and if they can get a deal over the line, remains to be seen, and De Telegraaf journalist Verweij says one major issue may be the finances involved in the deal.
“I think he is still very expensive for Ajax, even with his salary. That will be very difficult. I do think Ajax will make another attempt,” Voetbal 4 U report him saying on the latest De Telegraaf football podcast.
It seems, then, there is work to do if this transfer is to happen at any point in the summer transfer window.
It’s easy to imagine Bergwijn would be happy to return to the Netherlands, given his time in England has hardly been a scintillating success, but it’s whether Tottenham will make a deal possible.
They’ll likely want to recoup much of the £27m they paid, and Bergwijn himself is unlikely to drop significantly from the wages he’s earning in England.
There’s a gap to be made up then, something we’re sure Ajax will be working on between now and the end of the season.
