There was only one reason why Porto agreed to sell Luis Diaz to Liverpool in January, and that’s their huge need of money.

Currently on top of the league table, the Dragons needed their biggest star to carry on with a strong campaign, and that’s why manager Sérgio Conceição made it public that they did not like the transfer.

Liverpool signed Diaz for an initial amount of €45m, and it turns out that as now revealed by the Portuguese media, Porto are aren’t getting all of that.

Jornal de Notícias today features a story explaining that €9m from the move is going to the player’s former club, Junior Barranquilla, who had 20% of a future transfer.

Then €2.8m is going to the agent, and considering that the Dragons spent €8m in the signing, their profit is of actually only around €25m.

According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Junior Barranquilla are getting even more than that, because adding to the 5% of solidarity mechanism, the club are actually receiving €10m for the transfer.

That’s undoubtedly great news for the South American side, who sold Diaz for €8m in 2019 and made the wise decision of keeping a percentage so they could get even more now that he’s involved in a bigger transfer.
