Bayern Munich have made a late attempt to hijack Barcelona’s deal for Manchester City’s João Cancelo, according to claims from Spain and Germany.

The La Liga side have to lower their wage bill to register new players and while they have been sorting this out, the Bavarian club have made an approach to sign the defender.

Sport journalist Toni Juanmartí initially reported a Champions League team was informed of the Manchester City player’s situation in case his loan move to the Camp Nou doesn’t go through.

He then confirmed it was the Bundesliga winners who called the 29-year-old in the ‘last few hours’. The two parties know each other well as the Portugal international spent the second half of last season on loan at the Allianz Arena.

Juanmartí’s claim is backed up by Cope’s Helena Condis, and she states Thomas Tuchel’s side are interested in taking the Manchester City defender on another loan deal.

Claims from Spain about Bayern’s interest  are echoed in Germany by TZ reporter Philipp Kessler, who states the Bundesliga side have asked about Cancelo in the last few hours.

Bayern have sold Benjamin Pavard to Inter Milan and are looking for his replacement on deadline day.

Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo claim Barcelona have started to sell Caneclo’s shirt on their official website.

They have also included a screenshot in their report but Sport Witness was not able to verify this at the time of publishing.
