With Andreas Christensen, César Azpilicueta and Antonio Rüdiger all quickly heading towards the end of their contracts at Chelsea, there will be a dire need to replace them if none of them renew.

The trio are all currently allowed to negotiate a free transfer with foreign clubs as they are in the final six months of their deals, and there’s a belief the first one on the aforementioned list could return to Germany.

Christensen knows the Bundesliga well, having spent two years on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach between 2015-17 before returning to Stamford Bridge, and Bayern Munich are reportedly interested.

This comes from Sky in Germany, who explain the Dane is the ‘hottest candidate’ to replace Niklas Süle, who has just been confirmed as a future Borussia Dortmund player from next season onwards.

It’s made clear the fact Christensen is available on a free ‘could be the decisive factor’, as Bayern Munich, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘no longer have the financial means to sign a central defender for €30-40m’.

That will likely change going forward when everything returns to normal, but as we have seen elsewhere over the past year or so, free transfers have become more and more common.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens going forward, but Christensen appears to be top of the list at the Allianz Arena these days.
