Earlier on Thursday, we covered an article in the Spanish media claiming that Atlético Madrid wanted the signing of Chelsea’s César Azpilicueta to be sorted in the next 48 hours.

Well, if the latest from AS’ Aritz Gabilondo is to be believed, they will have their wish granted, with the transfer to be completed very quickly.

The journalist took to Twitter to bring the latest on the situation and explains the Spaniard will be a new Atlético Madrid player ‘today’.

First will come the announcement from Chelsea that the defender’s contract has been terminated, likely for services rendered.

This will then allow the La Liga side to put out the official communication that they will be acquiring the former Osasuna and Marseille star.

Gabilondo describes the move as a ‘great signing’ for the Spaniards, who will receive a huge amount of experience in their defence after everything Azpilicueta has achieved at Chelsea over the years.

The 33-year-old has spent the last 11 years at Stamford Bridge, making 508 appearances for the Blues over that time period, scoring 17 goals and assisting another 56.
