Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is one of Atlético Madrid’s ‘most fancied’ options for next summer, should he be available on a free transfer.

That’s according to Fichajes, who say the defender is one of three potential free options Atlético are keen to move for should he now renew his deal with the Blues.

Christensen has been a regular for Chelsea this season and has earned praise from Thomas Tuchel for his performances, but there is doubt about his future at Stamford Bridge.

That’s because his current contract expires at the end of the season, and there has been no progress on getting him to sign an extension.

While talks have been held and there was initial confidence there would be an agreement, reports this week have indicated those talks have now stalled somewhat, leading to worries he could leave on a free.

Should that happen, Atlético will seemingly be waiting in the wings, with Christensen one of the players they are eyeing up to bolster their squad.

They consider the defender as one of several ‘top players’ who are available on a free and the sports management, headed by Andrea Berta, like him ‘a lot’.

They believe he would be a useful addition to their defence, particularly if Stefan Savic and Felipe were to leave, which is a distinct possibility at this moment in time.

Both players leaving would leave a ‘vacancy’ they need to fill, and they’d look to do so with the 25-year-old, who would be even more valuable because he’s available on a free.

There’s no mention of talks having taken place at this moment in time, and the ball is very much in Chelsea’s court with the contract talks anyway, but it seems the interest is there from Atlético nonetheless.
