Emilio Izaguirre was surrounded by rumours over the past year. With many reports saying the player would be out of contract with Celtic at the end of the season, he was an obvious target for many clubs.
The fact that he’s only made 17 appearances under Brendan Rodgers this season was also a concern about his future, and that’s where the speculation started.
But Izaguirre’s deal still has one more year to run. That was revealed by the player himself in an interview with Honduran outlet Diez published on Tuesday, in which he’s made his situation at the club pretty clear.
“There are so many things said that are not right, I have one more year with Celtic and they don’t want me to go,” he told Diez.
The defender claims he’s too grateful to the club to just go somewhere else: “Celtic opened the doors for me seven years ago, I won 10 cups and if I win other it would be 11.
“How would I say I want to leave if we’re very thankful for all these years and if the manager and the directors tell me they want me to stay here, what can I do, just keep working hard and when they give me the opportunity give everything.”
Asked once again about the possibility of leaving Celtic in the summer, the defender said: “It’s complicated because if I have a contract and they want me to stay, I’ll do that. And if the fans and everyone treat me well, what can I do.”
Signed from CD Motagua for only €730k in 2010, Izaguirre has already managed to make over 250 appearances for Celtic.
