Rubin Kazan central defender Filip Uremovic has spoken to the Russian media and confirmed Celtic were interested in signing him.

The youngster was linked with a move to Celtic Park earlier in this transfer window.

Speaking to Championat, the 22 year old confirmed he had a chance to move to Glasgow but Celtic signed another player instead of him: “The transfer to Celtic this summer was a possibility but it didn’t happen. I don’t see it as something bad, I am very happy where I am at the moment. Celtic was an option because they play in the Champions League, but the deal didn’t take place, they’ve signed someone else.”

This summer Celtic manager Neil Lennon brought in Christopher Jullien for £7m from Toulouse and it seems they dropped their interest in Uremovic when they brought in the Frenchman.

However, despite not getting a move to the Scottish side, Uremovic said he’s happy at Rubin Kazan and focused on the club’s success.

The Russian side have built almost an entire new squad for this season and they’ve picked up 7 points in their opening three games in the league.

Uremovic joined Rubin from NK Olimpija for €1m last summer and immediately became a key player for the club

He is under contract until June 2022.
