On Monday, Mexican newspaper Zócalo Saltillo reported Brighton & Hove Albion have initiated talks over a potential deal for Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier.
The 23-year-old graduated from Colombian side Atlético Nacional and made a switch to the Mexican club at the start of this year. He’s kept five clean sheets and conceded 11 goals from 12 games for Cruz Azul so far and it has caught Brighton’ attention.
There’s been claims of Tottenham Hotspur’s interest, but Noticias RCN state the Seagulls would be ‘most interested in hiring’ the Colombian.
They have relayed a claim made by TUDN journalist Rodrigo Celorio. Roberto De Zerbi’s side are closely following the stopper and it’s likely they could table an offer.
Meanwhile, Gol Caracol have contacted Mediotiempo journalist Edgar Malagón to find out Cruz Azul’s stance on the South American, after Brighton showed interest in him.
Malagón claims the Premier League side contacted the Mexican club, without taking any further steps for a potential deal. He believes Mier’s exit is unlikely to take shape in the next window.
“What we knew is that there was a survey to find out his situation, but no offers, nothing. Cruz Azul expect a lot from Kevin Mier and that’s why he has a five-year contract,” he said.
“Personally, I don’t think he would leave this summer because he has been a key part of the new Cruz Azul project with Anselmi. Besides, being a young goalkeeper, he fits in well with the new Celeste philosophy. I still see him at Cruz Azul.”
