Ajax’s openness to a deal for youngster Carlos Forbs this month doesn’t make any sense as Burnley chase the youngster’s signature.

That’s according to journalist Sjoerd Mossou, who believes it would be a shame to see the 19-year-old depart this month, even on loan.

Forbs has been linked with a return to the Premier League at the end of this month, with Burnley chasing a loan deal until the end of the season.

It’s been reported that they’ll have to work hard to convince the winger into the move, but that was followed by reports in the Netherlands that inquiries had been made nonetheless and Ajax were open to letting him go.

That latter part seemed a little surprising given Forbs only arrived at the Dutch giants in a €14m deal from Manchester City in the summer and has been in the first team picture this season, with 25 appearances in all competitions for the club to date.

That would suggest he is very much a part of their plans and Mossou cannot understand why interest from Burnley is being entertained.

“It seems a bit of a shame to me if you invested in such a boy,” he said on the AD Voetbalpodcast.

“He was one of the greatest talents in the Premier League’s U23 competition. Apparently, Ajax believed in him. Then you can blame it on Sven Mislintat, but Forbs was of course quite a young and interesting player who has quite a good track record.

“That choice is Ajax’s. It is also not the case that he performs fantastically every week and is in the starting line-up. If there is a possibility with a possible sell-on option to get him back into the Premier League picture, then that might be explainable from a business perspective.

“I would have just given Forbs some time, because of all the purchases Mislintat made last summer, I don’t think he is the strangest.”
